General Manager, Granite Curling Club - Job Description

​

The Granite Curling Club is looking for an enthusiastic, organized, and motivated individual to join our team as the General Manager. The club is a versatile, multi-use facility that hosts a variety of activities, including curling leagues and rentals, curling bonspiels, as well as various events such as concert series other clubs. This exceptional, community-focused, not-for-profit facility features 9 sheets of ice, bar and restaurant, and a third-floor multi-use events room.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager, is accountable for the successful operation of the club, to ensure long term success and sustainability. The GM will lead the club as a professional business including engaging with city and community stakeholders and includes overseeing and growing the operations, programs, and finances of the Club. The General Manager collaborates closely with the Board of Directors to execute the vision and goals, ensuring the continued growth and strengthening of our reputation as a premier curling facility in Manitoba.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Granite Curling Club, including facility management and customer service.

  • Ensure the Club operates efficiently and in compliance with safety standards, regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Manage the scheduling of curling leagues, tournaments, and special events to optimize facility usage with the assistance from league representatives and bonspiel coordinators.

  • Coordinate and promote curling programs for all ages and skill levels, including recreational leagues, youth programs, instructional clinics, and competitive events.

  • Work with local schools, community organizations, and businesses to grow participation in curling.

  • Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring the financial sustainability of the Club.

  • Oversee financial operations, including invoicing, payments, membership dues, sponsorships, and restaurant and bar inventory and sales.

  • Assist with fundraising activities, securing grants, and identifying sponsorship opportunities to support Club operations.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members, volunteers, sponsors, and other community stakeholders.

  • In conjunction with the Board of Director Chairs:

    • Coordinate member communications, including newsletters, social media updates, and event promotions.

    • Prepare regular financial reports for the Board of Directors and provide recommendations for financial improvements.

    • Coordinate volunteer efforts for club events and activities.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise 15-20 employees and contractors.

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement long-term strategic goals for the Club.

  • Lead and contribute to the development of policies, by-laws, procedures, and strategic initiatives to ensure the Club’s ongoing success.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in management, preferably in a not-for-profit, sports, or recreation-based organization.

  • Proven track record in financial management, budgeting, and operations.

  • Experience in program development, event planning, and community outreach.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency with office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with online website and registration systems (Curling I/O).

  • A degree or diploma in business administration, sports management, or a related field is preferred.

  • Strong passion for curling and an understanding of its culture.

  • Knowledge of CurlManitoba regulations is an asset.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate club events and programming.

  • A vulnerable sector check will be required as a condition of employment.

 

This is a 12 month/ year position with emphasis on the curling season (September to May)
